Introduction by Bill St. Arnaud, Senior Director Advanced Networks for CANARIE Inc., Canada’s Advanced Internet Development Organization

November 2006

Here is another great example developed by the Nortel research team, in partnership with GLORAID partners around the world, demonstrating the power of cyber-infrastructure with web services and mashups for just in time computation. The demo showed how a complete computational image could be transferred between sites around the world in seconds in the event that any one site had catastrophic failure. This type of capability is essential for critical transaction based cyber-infrastructure that might be needed in global or national disasters such as hurricanes, earthquakes, etc.

The GLORIAD VMTdemo at SC’06 was the latest in a series of demonstrations aimed at showing how virtualization of resources can be made adaptable and dynamic to provide a richer experience for the user. Employing Web Services to simplify the various “mashups,” computation can be delivered at the right place and time.

Virtual host nodes were located at Amsterdam, Daejeon (Korea), Chicago, and Tampa. GLORIAD supported 2xGbE connections between Amsterdam, Daejeon, Chicago, and New York, respective for data and control. Atlantic Wave and Florida LambdRail provided 2xGbE connectivity between New York and Tampa. CANARIE provided a UCLP APN between Seattle and Chicago to NYC.

Nortel’s Dynamic Resource Allocation Controller (DRAC) orchestrated the “just-in-time” lightpath cross-connects at switching nodes in Seattle and Chicago using UCLP and TL-1 proxy interfaces. Nortel’s sensor virtualization and event processing prototype was leveraged to monitor per-rack temperature and UPS events within the Tampa data center to generate the sensor triggers.
