OptIPuter: Global Visualcasting @ SC08

UIC/EVL, with corporate partner Sharp Laboratories of America, entered “Global Visualcasting – Collaborative Remote Visualization Over High Speed Networks” in the SC08 Bandwidth Challenge (BWC), and were among six finalists. UIC/EVL used Sharp’s prototype 4K (8-Megapixel) display.

In “Global Visualcasting” demonstrations throughout the week, EVL streamed 4K and Full HD video, audio and visualizations among three booths on the SC08 show floor in Austin (the SARA, KISTI and EVL/Calit2/SDSC booths), two Midwestern universities (UIC and University of Michigan), Masaryk University in the Czech Republic and University of Queensland in Australia, to create a sustained global teleconference sharing visualizations of massive datasets.

UIC/EVL connected to SCInet to reach the SARA and KISTI booths on the show floor, to connect to CiscoWave to get to StarLight to get to Michigan (Michigan LightRail) and Masaryk (CESNET), and to connect to Pacific Wave to get to Australia (AARNet).

Note: While this demo did not use TransLight/StarLight, prior tests did use it to reach SARA in The Netherlands. This demonstration relied on the CESNET transatlantic network to connect to the Czech Republic.
