CineGrid 2008: Transferring Data from the Czech Republic to Los Angeles

On June 6, 2008, CinePOST, a post-production facility at Barrandov Studios in Prague, used its 10Gbps optical network to transfer seven 283GB files (about 2TB) to Calit2 at University of California, San Diego (UCSD).

Barrandov staff member Felix Nevrela was in Los Angeles and needed additional data from Prague for his project. CinePOST investigated several ways to deliver him a hard drive – including flying someone to Los Angeles, and express shipping service – but time was too limited.

Instead, data was sent from CinePOST, over CESNET (from Prague to StarLight), and then over CAVEwave (from Chicago to Calit2/UCSD) –the network transmission was accomplished in 8 hours over a 24-hour period, which included arrangements with globally located CineGrid members.

As Felix did not have access to a 10Gb network in Los Angeles, he drove to San Diego with external raid disks to collect his data. This demonstration showed the need for a persistent CineGrid infrastructure.

Note: While this demonstration did not use TransLight/StarLight, it leveraged investments from the Czech Republic for international transatlantic connectivity.
