Qwest Communications Provides Bandwidth Support for iGrid 2005
Denver, CO, October 4, 2005 - Qwest Communications International Inc. (NYSE: Q) today announced that it provided very high-speed connectivity last week for International Grid (iGrid) 2005, a triennial workshop event organized by the high-performance computing research community to bring together the brightest individuals in applications, middleware and networking. Qwest provided a 10 gigabits per second circuit allowing iGrid to showcase international grid computing using advanced networks.
iGrid 2005 was a coordinated effort to accelerate the use of multi-10Gb international and national networks, to advance scientific research, and to educate decision makers, academicians and industry researchers on the benefits of these hybrid networks. This year, iGrid showcased more than four-dozen real-time application demonstrations from 20 countries, as well as a symposium with 25 lectures, panels and master classes on the applications, middleware, and underlying cyber-infrastructure.
The 10Gb Qwest link provided at iGrid 2005 ran from Chicago to Los Angeles and provided the key long-haul USA link for several demonstrations at the workshop. Specifically, the Qwest link provided support for the following key demonstrations:
- Live Encryption Demonstration: Hosted by Nortel, this state-of-the-art defining application is the first to achieve integrated data encryption for 10Gb optical networks using the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), approved by the U.S. National Security.
- e-Science Exploitation of Switched Lightpaths for eScience Applications (ESLEA): This demonstration showcased the scientific requirements of high-energy physics by moving data at gigabit speeds between disk servers in the UK and at iGrid, while providing real-time analysis of transport protocols. Researchers learned how to use simulation and visualization to understand DNA translocation across protein nano-pores in lipid membranes using high-performance machines.
We are extremely appreciative of Qwest’s support in sponsoring our workshop this year, said Maxine Brown, co-chair of iGrid. iGrid has been growing significantly since 1998 and we were thrilled to receive additional bandwidth from Qwest to display the most state-of-the-art grid computing networks around the world at the 2005 event.
Qwest is committed to advancing the future of telecommunications and our support of iGrid further demonstrates that commitment, said Diana Gowen, senior vice president, government service division for Qwest. With one of the most advanced offerings of network services on the market, Qwest is proud to have offered our support to help make this year’s iGrid workshop successful.
With the theme of Global Lambda Integrated Facility (GLIF), iGrid 2005 took place September 26-29 in San Diego, CA iGrid displayed advances in scientific collaboration and discovery enabled by GLIF, providing a forum for the world’s premier discipline scientists, computer scientists and network engineers to work together in multidisciplinary teams to understand, develop and demonstrate innovative solutions in a LambdaGrid world. iGrid 2005 was planned by the Electronic Visualization Laboratory at the University of Illinois at Chicago and Calit2 at the University of California, San Diego, in cooperation with the Mathematics and Computer Science Division of Argonne National Laboratory, SURFnet, University of Amsterdam, and CANARIE.
