iGrid 2005 and GLIF Meetings Showcase International LambdaGrid Collaborations

October 1, 2005 - iGrid 2005 - the bi-annual, community-driven international Grid event that showcases the latest high-bandwidth grid and advanced networking technologies and applications - was hosted by the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2) at University of California, San Diego in September. iGrid is also a coordinated effort to accelerate the use of multi-10Gb international and national networks, to advance scientific research, and to educate decision makers, academics and industry researchers on the benefits of these hybrid networks. This year, iGrid showcased over 40 real-time application demonstrations from 20 countries, as well as a symposium with 25 lectures, panels and master classes on the applications, middleware, and underlying cyberinfrastructure.

On the last day of iGrid 2005, the Global Lambda Integrated Facility (GLIF) had its annual meeting. GLIF is an international “virtual organization” that supports data-intensive scientific research and middleware development on LambdaGrids. Internet2 participates actively in the GLIF community - both through MAN LAN and Internet2’s HOPI (Hybrid Optical Packet Infrastructure) project.
